Feasibility Study

What if Massachusetts gas companies replaced leakprone gas pipes under our streets with interconnected street-segment geothermal?

BuroHappold Engineering, an international engineering firm, won HEET’s request for proposal to assess the feasibility of networked geothermal for Massachusetts.

BuroHappold found that networked geothermal systems (previously called GeoMicroDistricts) could:

  • Provide 100% of the heating and cooling for a significant portion of the state.
  • Improve safety since water is not explosive.
  • Reduce emissions for the connected buildings by 60% immediately and by over 90% as the electricity grid becomes renewable.
